You should be very familiar with your GPS unit before adjusting it in any way. In the case of this particular TomTom XL 330 GPS, the .clr  files are simply copied to the "schemes"  folder and changed via  "Change Preferences" "Change Map Colors" (press the colorful icon after tapping "advanced") - Choose the scheme you want to use for daytime, then press the colorful icon again and it will ask what scheme you wish to use for night. Other models may require research if or how to use a .clr file for a particular tomtom GPS model.

Daytime_111 and Nighttime_111 color schemes for your TomTom GPS in both day and night versions.  The daytime 111 uses light greens while the nighttime 111 uses deeper blues and greens while keeping the road legend colors the same.
